The Devil Made Me Do It

The Devil Made Me Do It

I was planning another entry today, but the devil persuaded me to follow its lead in another direction for this one.  The Devil Wears Prada*, that is.

The fact that Meryl Streep is the Avatar of the acting world and I could watch her say, “Blah, blah, blah,” for two hours has nothing to do with this choice.  The “devil” teaches us an amazing lesson in this movie.  Miranda (Streep) was, for lack of a better word, a heifer.  She was mean, nasty and just plain stank-a-dank.  We’ve met people like this that try to make you feel bad by saying crass things or giving you dirty looks.  Like Miranda these people are itchbays (brush up on your Pig Latin), but they need your compassion more than anyone else.  Oh no!  Yes, I said it.  These people are really hurting more than you know.  Case in point, the scene where she is sitting on the couch, with no makeup (looking fiercely flawless), gives us a glimpse into her hidden pain.  She breaks down at the thought of another divorce, her children’s vulnerability, and the thought of what others will say.  Some may have been thinking that serves her right, and you reap what you sow and all that other stuff we’ve been taught to say about hurting people masquerading as jerks.

Granted, people like Miranda are difficult to stomach.  However, they are so full of emotional toxins that their attitudes smell like sewers.  Your destiny could be behind your response to difficult people and situations.  Contrary to popular opinion, an eye for an eye is so yesterday.  It’s easy to like likeable people, but the Avatars of the planet learn the greatest lessons from those people that make us uncomfortable when they walk in the room.  If nothing else you learn what you shouldn’t do.  How can you have peace in the presence of this “Hell on Heels”?  You stop and thank your Higher Self (your best you…the one you want to be everyday) for all that is good in your life.  Next, you say a little secret prayer for them asking they get hit by a…TRUCKload of joy.  See you after the show.

All the Single Ladies

20/20 in 120 is no ordinary movie critique. It is one hip chick sharing the lessons movies have taught me in hopes my lessons will help you finally open your eyes to see your destiny reaching out to you like a 3D movie.  “See you after the show”.

THEATRICAL THROWBACK

Most of the movies discussed will be theatrical throwbacks.  Movies I have seen more than once or twice and have left a lasting impression.

All the Single Ladies

This one’s for the ladies.  Ladies, most of us have an internal battle going on between the woman we want to be for everyone else’s approval (Ego) and the person you want to be for your peace of mind and life’s purpose (Spirit).  What most of you don’t realize is that war will kill you just like a snipers shot in the dark.  This death is not a quick and dirty death…it is slow and agonizing and grows from the inside like a malignant tumor.

In The Long Kiss Goodnight*, Samantha (Geena Davis) is a suburban school teacher who, after a bump on the head, begins to remember parts of her past as a lethal agent named, Charly.  The movie gets more and more interesting as she slowly becomes more and more herself and starts shooting people and blowing up things.

It seems many of us, like Samantha, have forgotten how to be the person we are meant to be.  So lost in the ideas others have imposed on us and the ideas we’ve imposed on ourselves, we are only seeing glimpses of the woman we used to be.

Wouldn’t you hate to have the real you wake up like a sleeping lioness ready to devour you because you’ve neglected its hunger for nurture for so long?  Instead of being shockingly consumed, begin to gently wake her and peek into your destiny by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What did I love when I was a kid?
  2. What do people I trust tell me I do well?
  3. What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?

Samantha showed up as the alter-ego when Charly “vacated” the premises.  Is your destiny on the other side of two women with one single destiny?  All the single ladies need to put your hands up and surrender to your life’s purpose.  Stand up and take your place in your life or someone else will do it for you.  See you after the show.

  SHOW NOUVEAUX

When I see a new movie I will be careful not to give too much away.  I will give you my take away and encourage you to look for this lesson when you see the movie for yourself.

Get there early and stay until everyone’s gone

That’s not a headline…it’s my advice to you if you want to see the movie, Iron Man 2*.  It is a wild roller coaster ride from start to finish.  I loved the action, the story and the dry and sarcastic humor of the most resilient man in show business, Robert Downey Jr.  The advice posing as a headline is the best advice I can give you for any aspect of life where you want to achieve success.  Get there early and find out what the competition is like, where you need to stand and where the exits are in case of an emergency.  Stay until everyone’s gone to see who the real competition is, if you still like where you’re standing and to meet, and network with, the early birds for the next opportunity.  The newcomers will rock your world in this one!  Whatever you do stay until it’s over.  See you after the show.

*Iron Man 2 (2010)-Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson.  Written by: Theroux & Lee.  Directed by: Jon Favreau.   Now Showing!
